Lotsa food!

I have been kind of hungry for the past few days. I think part of it had to do with the big swim workouts I did over the weekend. I ate a little extra on each day that I was hungrier than normal. I didn’t eat a whole bunch extra though. I was a little hungry when I went to bed each night, but being lazy and not wanting to wake up and get more food, I thought I was fine.

Apparently I wasn’t fine. Yesterday, I woke up STARVING and remained that way the entire day. No matter how much food I ate yesterday, I was still famished and would quickly need to shove more food in my mouth! It was like I had a tapeworm eating all my food and saving none for me. Have you ever had a day like this?

All together, I ate almost 3,000 calories yesterday over a total of 5 meals. You know how most people eat 3 meals? I just ate 5 yesterday! It must have worked though. I haven't been all that hungry today.

Just because I'm sure you are dying to know, here is everything I ate yesterday. Keep in mind I am not a good cook. Also keep in mind we don’t have that many varieties of food in our freezer. You will see the same 5 foods repeated over and over again on my menu yesterday.

Okay, here goes... Are you ready?

Breakfast (7:00 A.M.): 2 Pop-Tarts
Lunch (11:00 A.M.): A bunch of mini-vegetarian corn dogs and 2 packets of oatmeal
Dinner #1 (4:00 P.M.): Amy's Organic burrito and 2 packets of oatmeal
Dinner #2 (6:00 P.M.): More mini- vegetarian corndogs and 2 more packets of oatmeal
Dinner #3 (10:00 P.M.): 2 Slim-Fast bars and another burrito

Also keep in mind that my stomach was growling violently between all these meals. Another thing to keep in mind: Eating this much food in a single day is a pain in the behind!

Moral of the story: I will no longer be lazy and go to bed a little hungry. I will eat extra food when I am hungry so my body doesn't have to play catch up with me- and give me a crazy day such as yesterday. (This advice should be pretty self-explanatory, but apparently it wasn’t for me!)

The reason you're so hungry might also have to do with the fact that you have no grains, fruits, vegetables, or healthy fats! Try whole grain cereals, brown rice, real oats (not the sugared-up instant kind), avocados, healthy oils (canola or olive for a start), flaxseed, any fruits you like and are in season, and some steamed or sauteed veggies.

Trust me, just try it and you'll feel loads better and be fueling up those awesome workouts!

Thanks for the advice! My bad diet is probably not helping to fuel my workouts very well! What would you put the oil on top of? (I have no idea- I don't know how to cook!)

Hey swimming rose!
Haha that was me as anonymous before. I forgot to sign in cuz I'm lazy. Anyway I'm your age and a vegetarian. I'm training for some major half/fullmarathons next year so I've got some basic stuff you can start with.
Try this as an easy starter menu:

breakfast: 2-4 slices of 100% whole wheat toast with 2 tbsp nut butter (any kind you like) and honey/jam. Also 1/2 cup oats cooked with a mix of water and juice w/ cinnamon with a glass of lowfat milk or soymilk on the side and a banana (or other fruit)
snack: some nuts or a natural bar such as kashi and some cereal or fruit
lunch: 2-3 cups (dry) whole grain pasta noodles topped with marinara sauce with peas tossed in and cheese on top and olive oil drizzled all over. Some sort of protein (such as tofu or mini corn dogs if you like em that much :)) on the side.
snack: some baby carrots dipped in nut butter
d: 1 or 2 of your amy's burritos, some fruit, some microwaved-steamed (zap em for 2-3 minutes) veggies drizzled with olive oil on the side; 2 glasses of milk or some yogurt with fruit
snack: hot cocoa and some toast with nut butter

Change it however you like, but that menu should have all your food groups and vitamins/minerals in there. Experiment! Whole grains! Lean protein! Healthy fats! Fruits, veggies, etc. It'll take you all the way. I saw your post about potential. And nutrition is major for maxing out some serious potential.

That menu does seem to be a lot healtier than what I have been eating! Some of the things sound really good too- like the toast with peanut butter and honey. That is definitely a lot of food though. I hope that is not supposed to be eaten all in one day!

My level of activity is pretty comparable to yours and that's probably around the quantity I eat every day-- sometimes more, never less. I'm pretty small too (~100lbs but we don't have a scale so I dunno). You could definitely pack it all in and feel your energy levels improve.
