Wolves in the neighborhood!

Yesterday I went for an hour and a half run in my neighborhood. It was a great run. One of the longest runs I have done this year. I think I went about 7 miles or more. When I came home, however, I found out that there is a pack of wolves in our neighborhood. The animal control people came over to our house last night to tell us.

A PACK OF WOLVES!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT????
We found out that the wolves are still a couple of miles down the road, but they are still pretty close to our house. That is how you know you live in the middle of nowhere! When you are being threatened by wolves! I am very thankful I didn't get attacked!

You know what the funniest thing is? My mom thinks she heard strange howling noises a couple of days ago? She could be imagining the noises, but that is still kind of strange.

I guess untill the animal control people figure out what to do about the pack of wolves, I am not going to be able to run or ride my bike much in the neighborhood. Perfect, as soon as the weather gets nice, I get chased inside again by a pack of wolves! That is Ohio for you though. A very bizzare state.

I want to pet a wolf! Haha. Just kidding. I would probably run for my life if I saw one.

Hi,

My name is Lilith. I live in the Netherlands and came across this forum because I´m quite sure I saw a wolf yesterday in a little village where I am minding a dog. I went for my late walk with the dog and near the road I saw a wild looking animal. At first I was very far from it and I was really wondering what it could be. It wasn´t a dog, neither a fox. When I came closer I realized it was a wolf. It was actually sitting a few meters from me. It was beautiful, very proud. A dog isn´t that proud. Then it saw me and the dog and he went back into the woods. But the way he walked was also different from a dog. It looked more like a deer somehow. It was beautiful and amazing! I am really grateful that I saw the wolf.

It is a bit strange however, because there haven´t been wolves in holland for ages. But after serving the net to find out ALL about wolves I found out that the wolves were signalized 200km from the dutch border in germany. This means they are coming to holland, but no-one knows how long this will take. A wolf can walk about 100km per night so it´s actually very likely that the wolf is here now. I love it. I love wild animals. Although I have to admit that today I didn´t walk as confident with the dog as I used to. When I heard a noise it the bushes I couldn´t help but to pull the dog away!

Anyway, wolves are really beautiful and nice animals. You don´t have to be scared for them as they are actually scared for people. Only when they have rabies they might attack you. People and wolves ought to help eachother out in finding food. Don´t relay on the fairytales they are only there to scare the crap out of you :)
On the internet you can read really beautiful things about wolves.

Well,
Good luck with running! And be grateful when you see a wolf.

Personally, I'm not a runner, but do spend alot of time "out there" in the woods way from immediate help. I love wild animals as much as anybody, especially thanks to the opportunities I have had to see many species either right in Columbus or only a short distance away. However, I become very disturbed at the blithe belief that wild animals are "nice" or, for that matter, that anybody can know ALL about them. (Re: "The Grizzly Man", and an unfortunately foolish companion, was mauled to death by what he insanely believed was an animal he knew ALL about.)

Wild creatures have their own agenda: survival. A lone human that appears small or weak enough oh, say, a CHILD) can become a target. Full-grown adults have been attacked by cougars in the Western US. Even discounting the hunting instinct in large carnivores (and that's exactly what they are!), small animals, such as racoons, or perceived docile animals, such as deer, can become very dangerous if they sense a threat. Pride can sudden become very unimportant the moment any animal (or a pack of animals, THINK anout it) has a part of your body in its mouth(s).

I do not advocate the blind killing of wild animals--who would? But it is my opinion that human safety is more important than any animal. If a wild meat-eating animal is a potential threat to humans it should be relocated or killed.

NEVER assume a wild animal will react like a pet. NEVER assume a large carnivore will be afraid of you--sometimes you don't get see them first.

The beauty of Nature cannot be denied, especially if it is experienced and used wisely.

Hello,

Wolves typically have yellow eyes. The wolf in this photo appears to have blue eyes. It is likely that it is not a pure wolf and was produced by breeding between a wolf and a siberian husky dog.

The last time I checked... some ten years ago, there had never been a single incident of a healthy wolf attacking a human.

There are however, recorded cases of "deer" attacking and killing people. If you are not afraid of deer, then you should not be concerned about the wolves. A buck deer can cause harm with his antlers and either sex can hurt you with their hooves.

I was standing in the woods this morning during a rainstorm and two deer that I see frequently came within twenty feet of me. I did not make any sudden movements and although they noticed me, they did not perceive me as a threat and continued to browse. They continued to look at me as if in wonder of what kind of human is in the woods in a downpour. These two deer also watched me swimming in the creek a month ago or so. On that occasion, when they first saw me approach on a footpath, they startled, ran just a little ways and stopped behind cover. When I got in the creek, the deer came out from behind cover to watch me swim.

I had a female medium-percentage wolf-dog as a companion for nearly a decade. She was produced by breeding a timber wolf with a siberian husky. They can be wonderful companions. They are not for everyone. When I moved to Columbus, people expressed their surprise to see what appeared to be a wolf walking downtown. She was a gorgeous blue-eyed animal and as another posted commented, wolves move more like a deer than a dog.
